DNS-over-VPN: Introduction

Getflix DNS-over-VPN provides an alternative way of connecting to our DNS servers using a VPN. This allows you to use our DNS servers in situations where it wouldn't normally be possible.

The best part is, the VPN is only used for DNS, all other connections (e.g. web browsing, streaming) use your regular Internet so your browsing won't slow down (unlike a regular VPN).

Getflix DNS-over-VPN is best used in situations where it is not possible to use our DNS servers normally, for example:

  • In a hotel room, college campus or public WiFi hotspot
  • On iPhone, iPad and Android devices using 3G or 4G
  • ISPs or countries that block access or hijack 3rd party DNS servers

Getflix DNS-over-VPN can be used on any device that supports VPN connections. Click on the device below for instructions on how to setup DNS-over-VPN.

Attention Windows 10 Users

Due to bugs in Windows 10 (see http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-networking/win-10-properties-button-of-ipv4-and-ipv6-settings/211c9745-f07b-4910-b94a-ba636cfe63f7 and http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-networking/win-10-dns-resolution-of-remote-network-via-vpn/513bdeea-0d18-462e-9ec3-a41129eec736) DNS-over-VPN is currently not officially supported on this platform.

Advanced users can follow these instructions to get the DNS-over-VPN feature working on Windows 10. Hopefully, Microsoft will fix these bugs soon and we can officially support it!

TCP/IP Settings

  1. Launch PowerShell
  2. Type 'Get-VpnConnection' to list the VPN connections
  3. Type 'Set-VpnConnection -Name "<VPN connection>" -SplitTunneling $True'

DNS Resolution

VPN connections are automatically set with an interface metric of 10 which is higher than the automatic interface metric set for LAN/WLAN connections and routing will favour the connection with the lowest interface metric.

Manual changing of the interface metric on the LAN/WLAN adapter to 11 will overcome the issue (do not change the interface metric for the VPN connection as this will always default to 10 on every connect). This setting can be found in the Advanced TCP/IP settings for the LAN/WLAN adapter.
